The Veil

“They didn’t notice it then and they don’t notice it now, don’t notice that there’s nothing left behind the veil. Only Christ can get rid of the veil so they can see for themselves that there’s nothing there” – 2 Corinthians 3:14

I was just a girl when I met you

The guys around me told me I was pretty

But you told me that you were enthralled by my beauty (psalm 45:1)

You looked at me like I was a princess

And gave me the authority of a king

From a young age I was raised as royalty

Because of the one to whom I had been betrothed

Because I was yours.

I was just a girl when you started to shower me with your love

The guys around me told me they loved me

But you told me that you had loved me with an everlasting love (Jerimiah 31:3)

It was a kind of love I still do not understand

So pure, so powerful, yet so simple

You guarded me jealously

And loved me with abandon

But I was just a girl oblivious to the love you spoke of

You loved me not for what I had done

But because I was yours.

I was just a girl when I first abandoned you

The guys around me let me go

Yet you said that you would never leave me nor forsake me (Hebrews 13:5)

I walked away from you

But you never walked away from me

You kept calling me

Even when I ignored the various love letters you had sent through your messengers

But you pursued me continuously

Because I was yours.

I was still a girl when I considered giving up on you

Things had gone bleak and we didn’t speak like we used to

I had become jealous that you poured yourself into everyone but me

I was ready to leave you for good

But then you told me—

that not even death could separate us (Romans 8:38)

Because I was yours.

I am no more a girl now,

I have finally come to submit myself to you

Finally reconciled to spend the rest of my life with the one—

To whom I was once betrothed

It was a glorious ceremony –

The day I said I do

You looked at me and lifted the veil

Causing me to abandon all the ones who came to me with beautiful lies

You showed me that their words were empty but yours breathed life

And now I understand it is because you first loved me—

That I would be now and forever yours.
